Where does your recycled wood come from?
A variety of sources--from derelict old farm sheds to the demolition of old wharves (and everything in between). More generally we say that we get our wood from renovations, demolitions, kerb side pickups, skip bins, and people doing clean-ups at houses or industrial sites.
There are two reasons why people give us their waste wood:
- drop off at waste management facilities cost hundreds of dollars per tonne.
- it's easier and more fun to drop off to Turnaround Timbers (Valley Heights).
- it saves old growth forest being harvested and therefore avoids the yucky feeling when you are responsible for good wood going into landfill.

Is it more expensive than buying new wood from the Big Green Shed?
No, not really. Because it can be hard to compare prices when the sizes differ, we have converted our prices into an average price per cubic metre and then compared our price to the average per cubic metre price of Sydney timber yards (and The Big Green Shed), and they are comparable to blackbutt prices and on average cheaper than spotted gum.
What is definitely true is that new wood is more expensive on our environment. Every piece of recycled wood that is used helps reduce the need to harvest old growth forests somewhere in the world.
Is recycled wood safe?
Ours is! Not all recycled wood is safe as it may contain wood that has been treated in some way. We simply don't deal with any treated timbers.
We can offer a range of perfectly safe beautiful recycled wood. Pop in for a look (and smell).
Is recycled wood suitable for outdoors?
It sure is. Our recycled hardwoods are perfect for outdoors, or for any other purpose. Well seasoned Australian hardwoods are some of the most durable in the world.
Pop in and we can help you with the perfect selection for your project.
Do I have to finish the wood I have just bought from Turnaround Tmbers?
This depends. If you are going to be using the wood indoors and it will be touched by hands, then yes, you will probably want to put a protective coating on it (benchtops, tables tops, furniture, etc).
If the hardwood is going to be outside then a finish is not necessarily going to prolong its life (Australian hardwoods are super durable), but a finish will help it to keep its clean wood colour and hold off the greying process.
We stock a variety of non-toxic natural finishes. Check them out on our 'services' page, or come and have a chat about it.
Is recycled wood the same quality?
It depends on your definition of quality. The great advantage of recycled wood is that you can be sure that it is perfectly seasoned and stable. We straighten and plane the wood to make it square and smooth. It therefore works just the same as new wood. The exception is pieces that we have kept rustic, these can have a much greater aesthetic quality.
Will you cut the wood for me if I don't have the equipment?
We sure will. We offer a cutting and shaping service.
What is the difference between recycled wood, reclaimed wood, second hand wood, and salvaged wood?
Often the terms recycled and reclaimed are used interchangeably and largely mean the same thing. However, sometimes reclaimed wood may not have already been used serving some function. It may have been 'new' at some stage but now it is unwanted and weathered waiting for someone like Turnaround Timbers to give it new life.
Second hand wood is different to recycled wood as it has not been processed (straightened and planed clean). There is significantly work invested in recycled wood.
At Turnaround Timbers we refer to timber that has come from fallen trees that were destined to rot or be mulched or burnt as salvaged wood. Our slabs come from salvaged timber.
What about nail holes?
They're great! They add beautiful features of interest in most projects and they help tell the story that this wood has been turned around. They can be left as is or they can be easily filled with Timbermate ebony wood filler.
Many of our clean-cut pieces can have no nail holes at all. Come in and see what options we have in stock and we can show you examples of both and how to deal with them
