Identifying our recycled wood

What are the woods that we have at Turnaround Timbers? More importantly, how do we identify them? When it comes to recycled Australian hardwoods, this is never as easy as you might think. Chris and Coco are still learning.

The gum trees (eucalypts)

Most of the spectacular timbers we rescue and restore at Turnaround Timbers are tough, durable Australian Eucalypts (also known as gum trees). Australia is home to hundreds of eucalypt species, and more than 50 are used commercially for their strength and beauty.

When wood is bought brand new, its identity has been tracked from the forest to the mill to the timber yard. But when we save it from old houses, bridges, factories, or skip bins, that knowledge trail disappears. This means we sometimes have to play detective, especially with the gorgeous suite of blonde-coloured eucalypts—they can look deceptively similar.

Group names

Adding to the mystery, many timber trade names are actually a catch-all for a group of species with similar characteristics.

A perfect example is Tasmanian oak. When you buy 'Tassie Oak,' you're likely getting a blend of three incredible species: Eucalyptus regnans (Mountain Ash), Eucalyptus delegatensis (Alpine Ash), or Eucalyptus obliqua (Messmate).

Common woods

While the exact species can be tricky, we definitely see some familiar faces again and again at Turnaround Timbers.

Does the species matter?

It depends on what you're making:

Hardwood heroes (eucalypts): For most projects, the exact eucalypt species doesn't matter too much. They are all generally tough, hard, and durable, making them perfect for both indoor and outdoor projects. Just choose the look and colour that floats your boat.

The supporting cast (softer woods): If you fall in love with one of our softer recycled woods, you might want to double-check its suitability. Some are best kept for indoor projects, and a few softer varieties might not be ideal for high-impact applications.

Pro Tip: If you're unsure about whether a timber is right for your project, just ask us! We love talking wood and will happily help you choose the perfect pieces.

We are blessed to live with trees, and at Turnaround Timbers we are deeply appreciative of the massive variety of colours, textures (and smells) that wood has to offer us. We embrace them all with gratitude.
